Diamond jewellery is not just all about Diamonds but also the metal that holds them so it is important how the metal used in the making of diamond jewellery looks. To enhance the look of the metal after all the processes are done, metal is gone through the process of Plating which gives the jewellery a flawless and neat look. Let’s understand what plating is and how it is done

What is plating?

Plating is the process of applying thin layer of metal on the jewellery, that metal can be rhodium, gold, platinum and silver. In diamond jewellery plating is used to enhance the look and shine of the metal, hide all the scratched on the jewellery and prevent it from being tarnished. For white gold pieces, rhodium is applied.

These are the processes in which Plating is done

Cleaning

Jewellery has to be clean and dirt free before plating it. Any particles on the metal will affect proper and consistent plating. Cleaning is done using several processes like Ultrasonic Cleaning in which Metal jewellery is dipped in the solution and passed through ultrasonic waves which removes dirt and oils.

Polishing the Metal

Pieces are then filed, and pre-polished and prepared for Plating. This process removes rough textures, and any other scrathes on the jewellery. High shine is given to the metal for smooth plating.

Electroplating

This is the main process in plating. Metal part of the jewellery is connected with negative terminal, on the other hand plating metal is mixed in the solution which is connected to the positive terminal. When current is applied on the terminal, the plating particles bond with surface of metal in the jewellery and form a thin layer of metal over it giving it a smooth look. This coating is called as Electroplating.

Rinsing and Drying

After electroplating, jewellery is dipped in clean water and left in the air for drying.

Why is Plating Important in Diamond Jewellery?

Plating enhances the look and shine of the metal, rhodium plating adds the brightness around the diamonds. Protects the metal from scratches and tarnishing. Old jewellery can be replated to give it new look.

How long the plating lasts will depend on the thickness of the plating, thin layer wears off easily. Plating usually lasts until 1-2 years of daily used products like rings and pendants. Replating services is generally provided by general jeweller.

Plating is a crucial process which gives diamond jewellery a look of perfection. Plating ensures the durability and spotless finish of a product. Understanding different types of plating is important to be able to use product with care and long term.
